Great Egret Long Neck It is always funny to me just how small an Egrets and Herons appear when they have their necks folded up. Then they see something, usually a meal, and that necks stretches out so far! Here this Great Egret long neck is stretched as he looking for a meal. A few minutes he gets his meal.
Great Egret Meal This Great Egret meal seems like some I have had in life. Sometimes what is served just doesn't agree with you. Had a lot of meals like that as a kid.
Great Egret Lookout Out of the eight Egrets this seems to be the last one still hanging out. Here the Great Egret lookout is keeping a watchful eye on his rest stop. Heron Haven has a lot to offer the migrating birds.
Great Egret Finery Displayed One of the great things about spring is all the birds are displaying their best features and color. This Great Egret's finery is displayed here. While the colorful face can't be seen, the fine robe is on display.
Great Egret Perching This guy came in fairly close for me to capture him. It was a cool overcast day but the Great Egret perching in front of me stood out against the dark background. It has been a great spring as the Egrets aren't all that common.
Snowy Egret Hunting It was a great evening watching seven Great Egrets and this Snowy Egret hunting along the far bank. This is my first spotting of a Snowy Egret.
Great Egret Reflection This Great Egret started moving out from the shoreline looking for a meal. The sun is being to sink in the west creating a nice reflection.
Great Blue Heron Stocking It is hard to believe the patience a Great Blue Heron has when he is stocking his meal. The longer the neck the closer they are to making a strike.
Great Egret In Flight The bigger the bird the more fun it is watching them fly! So I was pretty excited to get this shot of a Great Egret in flight!
Great Egret Hiding In A Tree This Great Egret appears to be hiding in a tree. You can tell he is keeping an eye on me.
Early Morning Great Egret Spring and migration is underway. There were five Great Egrets on Heron Haven this morning and this shot is the first one I found and the first shot of the day.
Great Egret Not often I get to see a Great Egret during migration. This year one stop by for a rest and nourishment. This guy was a long way away!
Great Blue Heron Air Brakes The Great Blue Heron came flying in and put on his air brakes to settle down close to the shoreline.
Summer And Great Blue Heron Found this Great Blue Heron tucked back in a corner of one of the ponds.
Lunch Is Served Lunch is served by a Great Blue Heron. I find it amazing the hours it takes for wildlife to fix a meal. I have watched these guys stand still for so long that I move off to go find something else to photograph. Today I was lucking in his luck was pretty good.
Placement When serving a meal placement of the food is everything. Here this Great Blue Heron is repositioning his food so he can swallow. I find it funny that after they swallow a fish they take a drink of water.
Great Blue Heron Mallards And Canada Geese On a nice warm December day everyone is taking advantage of it even the wildlife. Great Blue Heron, Mallards and Canada Geese all crowded around the open water at Heron Haven.
Winter Great Blue Heron First time seeing a winter Great Blue Heron in the state of Nebraska. Everything tells me he should have gone south. Hope he makes through the winter.
Great Blue Heron In The Tree I have never figured out how a Great Blue Heron can get in a tree with such big wings! But here is proof they can get up there!
Black-crowned Night Heron In Flight Caught the Black-crowned Night Heron in flight as he makes a short hop to maybe better fishing grounds.
Heron Family Heron Haven in Omaha, NE is an amazing place to visit. On any given day what you see will surprise you. So on this day I was surprised to find the Black-crowned Night Heron. I don't see this guy very often. After awhile the Great Blue Heron came flying and landed in a tree behind the Black-crowned Night Heron. After shooting these two for awhile, the Green Heron came flying in. He was pretty young and stayed close to the shoreline. First time seeing three different Herons on one day in one place.
Green Heron Fishing It has been awhile since I have found a Green Heron. He was a little guy so I assume he has some growing to do but never the less he made a lot of opportunity for me to get his photo. I always think they look more blue than green but if they turn just right the green come through on their chest. It always seem that when they get excited fishing that their head feathers stand up.
_DSC6572.jpg Every once in awhile you get to see the green of a Green Heron. Normally they look more blue than green. Here the green is showing up as the Green Heron perched in front of me and the light is just right.
_DSC6630_B_D_N.jpg The Green Heron hunt begins after he hopped down from a higher branch. This guy is a young one judging by his size so I didn't see him catch anything, but it was fun watching him try.
_DSC6579.jpg This Green Heron had been setting on the upper branch of the dead tree looking at the water for food. Apparently he decided it was a good fishing spot as the Green Heron hopped down to a lower branch to begin his fishing.
DSC06440.jpg Found this Great Blue Heron hunting for his dinner. A family came out onto the boardwalk and the noise caused him to take flight and grab a perch on the railing. Before I could catch him perched on the railing he was scared off again.
DSC06254.jpg It was great to see the Wood Ducks and Great Blue Heron together in this sequence of photos of the Great Blue Heron in flight. After all these years of visiting Heron Haven, I continue to get surprises when I visit.
DSC06189.jpg I have always been amazed at the sense of protection portrayed by a Red-winged Black bird. I have seen a group of them attack a hawk and have been attacked by them on a golf course when one of us got too close to the water hazard! Here a Great Blue Heron moved to the other side of the pond as I approached. It didn't take long for me to realize he had landed close to a Red-winged Black bird nest in the cattails. Here is only one of several passes this Red-winged Blackbird made at the Great Blue Heron. As I shot this at 1/2000 of a second, and the two combatants came out blurry, you can tell they were moving at pretty good speed.
DSC06205.jpg A very warm afternoon and three Great Blue Herons were about. I managed to get this Great Blue Heron in flight. I am always amazed the the wing span they have. If you are close you can hear the wings flap in the air.
DSC06101.jpg While visiting Heron Haven I was informed that a Green Heron was by the photo blind. When I got there it was gone but I found this guy up in the dead tree. And I also spotted another across the pond fishing. This Great Blue Heron appears to be a lookout!
DSC06020.jpg There just isn't a better day than to watch a Great Blue Heron on a calm day stalking it's lunch.
DSC05767.jpg Green Herons seem to be misnamed as they always appear blue. However, just the right turn in the sun and the green appears.
DSC05814.jpg It was really fun watching this guy fishing. He kept swinging his head back and forth like he was trying to get the right angle to see through the sun glare on the water. It reminded me of a big boom with a camera on the end with the way he was swinging his head.
TheStrike.jpg Watching this Little Blue Heron hunting and managed to capture this sequence. |
DSC05913.jpg While out photographing a Little Blue Heron, a Great Blue Heron showed up for a little sunning. It is always fun to see the shape they take when sunning themselves.
DSC05655.jpg It had been reported that a Little Blue Heron had been sited at Heron Haven, so I went today to check it out. The heron was still there and while I was taking some shots of it I noticed that a Green Heron was up in the trees. Since the Little Blue Heron is north of where it normally is, to see it and another heron together is pretty exciting, for me anyway! |
DSC05650.jpg It has been awhile since I have seen a Green Heron at Heron Haven. As I was photographing another heron I saw this one perching in the fallen tree above it. He did come down off his perch but he disappeared into the weeds and I never saw him again.
DSC05600.jpg It is my first time seeing a Little Blue Heron up north here in Nebraska. It did take a couple of strikes before he finally caught his meal but he is young and he will get better. As a juvenile he is mostly white but as one can see he is well to getting his blue and maroon feathers. Hope he will hang for the summer so I can see him turn color.
DSC05273.jpg Early evening for this Great Egret.
DSC04975.jpg reat Blue Heron fishing on a nice spring day. He made a couple dives but never came up with anything.
DSC05044.jpg After a day of no fish biting the Great Blue Heron takes a rest in weeds by the pond. This is the first time I have ever seen a Great Blue Heron resting down low. Well it was out of the wind and in the sun.
DSC05088.jpg While photographing a Great Blue Heron on the other side of the pond, this Great Blue Heron was inbound to the far side of the pond. The other Great Blue wasn't doing much so this one provided some excitement for me.
DSC04969.jpg My first sighting of 2018 of a Great Blue Heron in fine plumage, He was a way off in the shadows fishing. I did see him catch one but he was still hungry as he hung around looking for more.
DSC01544.jpg Watched this guy for sometime this afternoon. I'm not sure how they can hunt with the green covering but later on he was successful.
DSC01636.jpg The Green Heron found success through the green soup. He spent a lot of time wiping the fish off on the log before swallowing it. I hadn't seen this type of behavior before but I hadn't seen him catching a fish with such thick covering.
DSC01516.jpg It is always good when you can get a photo of a young Green Heron. The wetlands at Heron Haven provides a good location to find these guys.
DSC00857.jpg It is great to see a Green Heron as there doesn't seem to be all that many around. He did allow for a number photographs to be taken of him. It seems like he is talking but I never heard any sounds from him.
DSC00848.jpg It has been awhile since I have spotted a Green Heron at Heron Heaven but this evening I was lucky. As I started walking down the boardwalk I noticed this guy setting on one of the handrail corners. He did let me get fairly closed which is uncommon for wildlife. But it was an exciting time!
DSC00668.jpg I find it amazing how long a Great Blue Heron can stand still when he is hunting for a meal. Sometime you can take a hundred photos before they will move an inch. And, you as the photographer absolutely afraid to move for fear of scaring them off.
DSC00510.jpg It is midday and the sun is bright. You have to squint as you look at the Great Blue Heron in the tree line. What do you do? You have your camera squint and turn the photo into a silhouette. Might just play with it a little more!
DSC00546.jpg This Great Blue Heron was a long way off and blended into the background until he started hunting for his meal. I had followed him from the back pond and thought I could see him but decided it was a stump at the water line I was seeing.
DSC00410.jpg Not very often I get to see a Green Heron so I was surprised to find this guy looking for lunch. He was a long way off and it was very bright out as it was midday. It was fun to find this guy and he did manage to grab two fish in the hour I watch him.
_DSC9650.jpg When you see a Great Egret the rest of the view kind of fades away. You have this big white body and on one end you have these tall black legs and the other end is the yellow eye and beak. In breeding season there are the additional decorative feathers that add a little sparkle that will catch your eye.
_DSC9651.jpg Watching large birds take flight is always an exciting moment. Watching a Great Egret take flight is even more exciting as these moments are few and far between.
_DSC9554.jpg A Great Egret in all his breeding plumage high up in a far tree. It is always a joy when I get to see one. This guy spent about two hours perched up in the tree before he started moving about.
_DSC9683.jpg Seeing the Great Egret in flight is something else. Getting a halfway decent photo is even better.
_DSC7557.jpg Got a chance today to watch a young Green Heron fishing. He was hopping around to find a good spot and I managed to catch a photo of him in mid-hop.
_DSC7046.jpg Nothing beats early morning with the sun coming up and you are alone surveying the landscape before you start your day. A slight wind to help cool you and a few of the neighbors starting to get around as you hear slight conversations. It is going to be a find day.
_DSC7046.jpg |
_DSC6498.jpg I have so enjoyed the visit by the Great Egrets so I tried to create with their beauty.
_DSC6515.jpg The Great Egret really stands out when you don't get to see them very often.
_DSC6548.jpg Great Egret, a rare visitor to wildlife sanctuary and a real treat for all visitors.
_DSC6501.jpg It was such a joy to see some Great Egrets arrive at Heron Haven. They are in their breeding plumage so there is a long tail of feathers on them. Compared to the Great Blue Herons they really stand out and are easy to spot. They are just amazing to see.
_DSC6583.jpg Great Egret stopping over at Heron Haven for a little nourishment on their way to their nesting grounds. With the straight plumes on the back one knows it is springtime.
_DSC6310.jpg This Great Blue Heron wasn't having much luck fishing. He seemed to be moving around but never found a good spot, for fish, but a good spot for me. He is in all his finery as it is mating season.
GBHeronLanding.jpg The legs always stand out on a Great Blue Heron. Here this one comes in for a landing on a dead tree limb.
_DSC5762.jpg When the Great Blue Heron sets with his back to you it makes me think he has a robe draped over his shoulder.
_DSC5427.jpg The Canada Geese have been pairing up and the Great Blue Heron has arrived. These two Canada Geese spooked the Great Blue and off they went.
_DSC5386.jpg A new spring and the Great Blue Heron has arrived at Heron Haven. He was getting some late lunch. It is amazing how long they stand still waiting for a fish to come within striking distance.
_DSC2637.jpg This Great Blue Heron isn't very afraid of people if you move slowly when around him. He had been fishing to the left of the boardwalk when he decided the other side was better for fishing. Watched him fly up to the boardwalk, walk across it and then jumping down into the water. Saw him pull two fish out.
_DSC2668.jpg The fish didn't catch the Great Blue Heron, that would have been something. I'm not sure how they where the fish is with the amount of duckweed floating on the water but I saw him pull three out of the water.
_DSC2375.jpg An overcast day but a Great Blue Heron still has to eat. There are two Great Blue Herons that can be found almost daily at Heron Haven in Omaha, NE. The two seem to dislike each other as when one flies in close the other takes off to the other end of the pond. As you can see here it is still a good fishing location.
_DSC1996.jpg I have always assumed the concrete post was some kind of survey marker, but not sure. Anyway it makes for a nice posing structure.
_DSC1929.jpg It is always great when you get a chance to watch wildlife acting naturally. Here this huge bird stands atop the handrail preening itself.
_DSC1938.jpg The Great Blue Heron preening itself on the fence of the boardwalk.
_DSC1895.jpg It is always fun to watch these big birds take flight. Their wings move so slowly compared to a lot of other birds.
_DSC1833.jpg I can only guess this Great Blue Heron was sunning himself or drying off. This was the second time he held his wings out and faced the sun. It almost looked like he was shrugging at me.
_DSC1777_2.jpg Another second or two and the Blue Gill has been swallowed by the Great Blue Heron.
_DSC1826.jpg I watched this Great Blue Heron for over an hour. He caught three fish and twice he spread his wings to just stand there and sun himself. Here he is taking care of an itch. It is amazing how much bird is on the skinny legs. This Great Blue seems to not be afraid of people walking slowly on the boardwalk.
_DSC1701.jpg It is amazing just how long these Great Blue Herons can set without moving.
_DSC1652.jpg Watching the Great Blue Heron hunting for a meal and he flew to this spot. It appears as if he has a buddy flying with him, a dragonfly.
_DSC1585.jpg Now for the finishing touches to a great meal. It is amazing to watch Great Blue Herons hunt for their meal. They move so slow and then a quick strike often nets them a meal. After swallowing a fish or if they miss, they seem to always take a little drink.
_DSC1514_2.jpg After finishing his appetizer, he started looking for his main course.
_DSC1569.jpg After he got the stick out of his mouth he enjoyed a fresh fish dinner in the shade.
_DSC1547.jpg Spent some time watching this guy fish and we both got lucky! He did come up with a mouthful of fish and stick. He wasn't letting go of the fish and the stick wasn't coming out. He solved the problem by walking to the back of the pond where he could get the stick caught in the weeds. It all worked and then I watched him take another fish. I was surprised that he came so close to me as I was about 60 feet from him.
_DSC1344.jpg It has been a good year for catching the great Blue Heron in flight. Head to toe and wing to wing, they take up a lot of room in flight.
_DSC1142.jpg First glimpse of the Great Blue Heron. It always pays to walk carefully as you approach the wetland. This has been a great year for photographing Great Blue Herons at Heron Heaven.
_DSC1202.jpg Sixteen minutes after first spotting the Great Blue Heron flying to the handrail, I get this "close-up" of him. It wasn't until another person came walking out onto the boardwalk that he flew away. It is always something for me to watch these guys takeoff.
_DSC0415.jpg After the Great Blue Heron takes flight it is through the trees to the other pond. The growth is so thick that I lose sight of him.
_DSC0406.jpg The Great Blue Heron hears me approaching and takes flight. Given their wingspread and the long legs. they take up a lot of room during flight.
_DSC9992.jpg This Great Blue Heron was in the cattails and was hard to spot. After spotting him it took some time for him to find his dinner but once spotted he moves very fast. He did catch his fish.
_DSC9926.jpg It is always great when you see a Great Blue Heron. It doesn't matter if they are standing on a branch or walking in the water hunting for fish. The amazing thing for me has always been watching them take flight.
_DSC9348_2.jpg Spent some time watching this guy set in the trees on the far side of the pond. After some time he took flight and circled the pond a couple of times and then flew off. It is really amazing how big their wings are!
_DSC6483.jpg This guy has been hanging around Heron Haven for several days but I hadn't caught a very good photo of him. I assume he will be leaving for his winter grounds shortly.
DSC04524.jpg Did not see this Great Blue Heron fly in I turned around and there he was looking for his noon day meal. There was so much going on in this little area I also didn't see him leave.
DSC01641.jpg Watch this Green Heron catching his meal. I was surprised with another flew in to catch his meal also but this one chased him off.
DSC01682.jpg This Green Heron was busy catching his meal and let me in very close to him. The real surprise was when another one flew. I believe they were young as they were both on the small size.
DSC01323_2.jpg The wet lands have been stocked with fish lately but this guy seems to have a taste for frogs. It took just over 3 minutes to get his lunch swallowed. This is the second day I have caught this guy feeding.
DSC00585.jpg This is my first Green Heron of the season. He just came flying in and spent a couple of hours hunting for food. He was successful so I left.
DSC00622.jpg The Green Heron is hunting for his dinner. Not sure what he sees but he does capture his dinner.
DSC00225.jpg This Great Blue Heron took a nice long stroll in the water looking for some food. He didn't find any and flew away.
DSC00233.jpg The first Great Blue Heron sighting at Heron Haven. It is good to see him back for another year. I thought he might have seen some food, but he never struck for it.
DSC04301.jpg It appears that we will be missing one bull frog. The Great Blue Heron appeared to have a hard time getting this meal down.
DSC04259.jpg After watching this guy standing on the far shore he decided it was time to move. It is hard to flow a bird in flight as it is attached to a tripod.
DSC04022.jpg This guy spent most of the time with his back to me while I stood on the boardwalk, in the middle of the pond under the very hot noon day sun.
DSC04111.jpg It took over an hour for this guy to find something to eat. They stand still for so long and then move very slowly towards their target and then bang!
DSC04163.jpg Great Blue Heron scratching reveals a large wing span. He spent most of his time with his back to me but shot materialized.
DSC00398.jpg Always on the look out for food, looks like he found something good, but no, he didn't.
DSC00397.jpg See, there he is.
DSC00412.jpg He finally came out of the cattails and showed his fine colors.
DSC00414.jpg I think he saw something and wanted a better look.
DSC00405.jpg Not very often when you get a chance to see these two beautiful birds side by side.
DSC02081.jpg Finally he decides to move and then he was gone into the brush.
DSC02079.jpg It has been awhile since I have spied one of these guys. He spent a lot of time just setting before he walked off.
DSC08917.jpg This guy was so far off and not moving he looked like a stump until looked thru the viewfinder.
DSC08934.jpg Saw two Great Blues in the same area and both in flight at the same time but I only got one in flight.
IMG_0137.jpg Found this guy over lunch. |
_DSC7216.jpg Just wouldn't come closer. |
_DSC7206.jpg First I seen in a couple of years. |
_DSC1224.jpg He took off before I got close. |
_DSC1221.jpg Wings and legs. |
_DSC1284.jpg Diving for lunch. |
_DSC1514.jpg Found one. |
_DSC1576.jpg What a long neck you have! |
_DSC1625.jpg Time to go. |
_DSC1544.jpg I think I see someone, better get out of here. |
_DSC1566.jpg Looking for some lunch. |
_DSC1725.jpg A lot of bird in the air. |
_DSC1726.jpg It is great to watch these guys flew. |
_DSC2416.jpg Take off before I could get there. |
_DSC2418.jpg In full flight. |
_DSC2483.jpg I found him anyway, scratchi8ng. |
_DSC2470.jpg Saw me coming and took off to the back. |
_DSC2519.jpg High flying. |
_DSC2101.jpg Can you see him? |
_DSC2549.jpg A Green Heron and a Painted Turtle. |
DSC03459.jpg No Great Blues but I did find this Green Heron. |
_DSC8654.jpg Off to the trees. Could hardly see him once there. |
_DSC8646.jpg Dinner over, time to go. |
_DSC8525.jpg Nice size dinner. |
_DSC8519.jpg Quick enough. |
_DSC8513.jpg How quick is he? |
_DSC8512.jpg I'm thinking he see something. |
_DSC8459.jpg Found this guy in the middle pond, he took off for the front pond and here he is taking off for the back pond. |
_DSC8727.jpg You have to take what you can get. |
_DSC8738.jpg Taking a walk on the wild side. |
_DSC8741.jpg Time to go. |
_DSC8735.jpg All this green stuff is fallout from the trees. |
_DSC8872.jpg Dinner is served. |
_DSC8884.jpg Just can't a picture of this guy in the light. |
_DSC9189.jpg A Green Heron looking for dinner. |
_DSC1063.jpg A Green Heron. |
_DSC1442.jpg They have some long necks when they want to. |
_DSC1421.jpg This guy was flying around a lot. Maybe looking for some dinner. |
_DSC2107.jpg Up close, thank goodness for zooms. |
_DSC2492.jpg The second guy taking off. |
_DSC2489_2.jpg One of two Great Blue Herons taking flight when I showed up. |
_DSC1510.jpg It is spring time and and they are returning. |
_DSC1507.jpg Has the whole pond to himself but she will come. |
_DSC7313.jpg Just another day hunting. |
_DSC7351.jpg Looking for a meal. |
_DSC7359.jpg I think he has found dinner. |
_DSC7394.jpg Drying himself off. |
_DSC7402.jpg Wasn't having much luck fishing so he moved here to try his luck. |
_DSC7318.jpg A Green Heron and a Muskrat. |
_DSC7461.jpg It would have been nice if the sun had been out! Been a long time since I have seen it! |
_DSC7677.jpg Finally got my first picture of the season of a Great Blue Heron. |
_DSC7680.jpg Just happen to catch a glimpse of something big flying overhead. |
_DSC8277.jpg Not a technically good photo but I liked it considering how I got it. |
_DSC8232.jpg Spreading his wings. |
_DSC8229.jpg It has taken a few months but finally. |
_DSC8279.jpg As we get into the season, you have to look harder to see them. |
_DSC8273.jpg After setting in a tree for an hour and a half, he flew in to find some dinner. |
