close-up of Sher-Dor Madrasah façade

Samarkand

In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bakhodur, ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori. Construction began in 1619 and took 17 years.
The tiger mosaics on the face of each madrassa are interesting, in that they flout the ban in Islam of the depiction of living beings on religious buildings.

A splendid Tiger and even a human oriental face? maybe far enough from Mecca to take a few artistic liberties
Now you have pointed out this convention (law?) it adds a touch of explanation for the endless geometry that Helen Betts has been showing us from the Islamic area

Very fine detail, well seen. V.
