11/4/2018 Earthquake-Actuated Automatic Gas Shutoff Valve

I ran out of hot water while in the shower yesterday. I could not relight the pilot in the water heater. I thought I had a water heater problem. When I did a load of laundry and put my clothes in the dryer that is when I realized I had no gas because the dryer would not get hot. I went outside and saw the gas valve fully on and then I saw the Earthquake-actuated Automatic Gas Shut Off Valve had actuated by showing a red bar in the window. I then had to shut off the gas and using a screwdriver to turn the Reset shaft 105 degrees until a green bar shows in the window. I turned the gas back on and went inside and started the dryer and re-lit the pilot on the water heater. I now have my clothes drying and hot water.

When we lived in Brea for a year (1986-ish) there was a Whittier earthquake. I was upstairs when it occurred and was bounced up and down on the bed, with my eyeglasses bouncing on my nose. VERY SCARY for a first time experience. I was concerned about the gas hot water heater which had pulled away from the wall and shut it off. It took days for the gas company to come and turn it on. Earthquakes are not only scary, but they're also inconvenient (and sometimes totally destructive). Let's hope the worst you get is just a bit inconvenienced.
