Several years a piece of leather came out from the zoom assembly of my 100 to 400 lens. It was past the warranty period but I had bought the lens with my Visa card with which I had an extended year of warranty coverage, and had all the necessary paper work. That repair was over $300 as well and Canon did repair it at no cost to me.

I've had my own Canon 24-105mm lens repaired TWICE by Canon for Error 01 (communication error between the lens and the camera).

Unfortunately, I'm now getting Error 01 once again on a fairly regular basis. As the frequency of Error 01 increases, I can see that the lens will eventually have to go back to Canon for repairs for the 3rd time for the exact same problem. However, I'm waiting until the lens becomes totally unusable. As noted above, this is not an inexpensive matter. Especially when you add having 3 repairs for just one problem together...
Unfortunately, Canon repair work only comes with a limited warranty. And my 24-105mm seems to wait until that short warranty period has passed before showing Error 01 problems again. Such is life.

Hope you have better luck.
