From Vienna we drove through "undiscovered" Austria - the pine forests and sleepy towns and villages of Styria and Carinthia. We climbed the Semmering Pass to stop in Picturesque Kindberg with its colourful maypole. We visited medieval Friesach, which dates from the 9th century and is one of the few walled towns in Austria with an intact moat. We drove through streams and farmlands to the Austrian Lake District, finally arriving in the celebrated spa town of Villach.
