From Neueschwanstein to Salzburg

We travelled into the Bavarian Alps and visited King Ludwig's fairytale Neueschwanstein Castle. It was a wet and misty day, making photography difficult. Fortunately we were transported up the steep hill to the castle, where we were amazed by the exhuberantly decorated Throne Room and Lohengrin Grotto. I normally dislikes opulent castles, but this one is refreshingly different. We walked back down the hill to a very welcome lunch at the restaurant in the car park. After visiting Oberammergau, the setting of the famous Passion Play, we crossed the Austrian border to Innsbruck. It was still raining, but we enjoyed visiting the rococo interior of the Wilten Basilica, and taking a walk around Innsbruck, where we stayed. On the way to Vienna, we stopped at the beautiful baroque city of Salzburg, visiting the Mirabell Gardens, Mozart's birthplace and the great cathedral. A shameless fan of "The Sound of Music", John wanted to join the "Sound of Music" tour, which we duly did.
