Family History: Descendants and Families of James Frederick Mitchell and Martha Beever

Fred Mitchell arrived in Australia from Dewsbury, Yorkshire on 21/3/1862, aged 22 on "Mistress of the Seas" which sailed from Liverpool. He married Martha Beever in the Registry Office, Sandridge on 24/4/1868. They had six children: Henry John born (1869 -1913), Emily Eliza born 1871, Frederick James,(1874-1948),Margaret Jane born 1878, Robert Arthur born 1881, and Sidney William born 1892. Frederick James is my grandfather, who married Matilda Hoskin in 1905 - see below and Hoskin gallery.

Frederick James and Matilda had 4 children: Dorothy Ada born 1906, Myrtle Isabel, 1908-2000, James Frederick 1914-1951 (my father) and Pansy (Pansy Matilda) 1916-1981.

A little more from me, Marj Beck (nee Mitchell) in Wandin North, Melbourne. He had enough money to buy a shop in Brunswick Junction, south of Perth, and after his marriage he bought part share of a tin mine at Greenbushes, near Brunswick Junction. Perhaps he had acquired this finance while helping his father Frederick with his timber cutting and mining, and also gained some skills at mining then also – or maybe Frederick gave him money to get started in WA. He was a handsome man. While a shop owner, a young lady, Lillian Sims would walk three miles across farms to get supplies for her parents. John Henry would get them together then shut shop and help her carry them home. They fell in love and married, moving to Greenbushes where they had many children. John died of a brain tumour when my father, Len was two years old, and thus began a very difficult life for Lillian and the children..

My maiden name was Mitchell and my father Len, was the youngest son of John Henry and Lillian, whom he met when he carried her shopping home across the paddocks. Robert Mitchell came to WA with John Henry and was known as Charles. It took quite a while to discover his proper name. He was a policeman at Quairading, a town in the wheat-belt and then in the city. I would love to find out more about George and Georgiana in Dewsbury. Apparently he was a merchant but I don't know what of.

His marriage certificate says his parents were George Henry Mitchell and Georgiana Hurst. Does anyone have further information?

My father was Leonard Mitchell, son of John Henry (called Henry John in WA), brother of Ern, both deceased. Fabulous to see the photographs too. Henry John died when my wonderful father was two years old and then began a very difficult life for Lillian with all the children to care for. I live in Melbourne and would love to see more photographs of Henry John and Lillian and family. My brother did the funeral service for Ernie and also his son Colin who died a few months ago.

This is a fabulous site. I am Susan Deeley nee Mitchell, daughter of Bertram Sidney Mitchell who was son of Sidney Mitchell. My cousin Christine Soldi allerted me to the site. I have a brother Robert. My son is Alexander Mitchell Deeley, my brother's daughter is Laura Elizabeth Mithell Unger and her 2 sons are Mitchell James and jayden Robert. Many family names recurr.

Hi, My name is Anthea Borg nee Mitchell, My grandad Ern is the son of Henry John Mitchell (known as John). John is Fred and Martha's first child, he came to WA for some reason and met and married Lillian Sims in 1899 (shotgun wedding) he died in 1913. I have been researching for many years and can't thankyou enough for this web page to see your great, great grandparents photo is fabulous.
