thank you so much you helped me do a project for school. See we had to make a biome and my partner and I choose a marine biome and had to include a food chain. I did my research found out the animals in one of the many food chains but still needed photos of the animals thats whe I came across your site. You had two of the sixteen photos I needed it might not seem like much but no one else had the photos( it would have been three had you had a tiger shark) but thanks anyway YOU ROCK!!!

Hi Eli, I managed to vote for second time for your magnificient gallery. This is simply unbelievable on how you manage to get such shots under water with PS45 ( or even with any more sofisticated camera ). I could not get that image quality even when I shot aquariums :-). Keep on diving and stay cool !

You can use it in fall automatic mode and it will work just fine. I personally used auto white balance, shutter priority mode, and an external strobe. See my equipment gallery. There is no single right way. There has been all kinds of information posted on the web about digital underwater photography. A good primer is on the Canon website: http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/uwphoto/index-e.html . You can also follow the discusions on the wetpixel or scuba board websites: http://www.scubaboard.com/f3/s Some good general advice: 1. Get low. Shoot images at the same level of your subject. Photos taken from above are usually less effective 2. Get close. No matter how powerful your strobe is, your photos will be sharper and more colorful up close due to attentuation and dispersion of light by water. 3. Let critters approach you, if possible. Otherwise you will have photos of the backsides of fish. 4. The photos depend more on the diver than the equipment. The best underwater photos Ive seen were Ellen Muller's gallery here on pbase. These were taken without an external strobe, only a dive light. She has the knack of getting very close to critters without spooking them. http://www.pbase.com/imagine S40 specific issues are: The Canon gets very hot in use. This drives any moisture in the camera into the housing where it condenses on the cold glass lensport. I finally found silica gel packs small enough to fit into the housing, and my camera didnt fog doing outdoor photos in a blizzard, so the silica gel can work. The housing comes with antifog which leaves a soap film on the lensport, and decreases resolution. I didnt like the antifog. You put it on the lensport, not the lens. 2. The protruding lensport will block the internal flash from reaching the lower right portion of the field at macro settings. At non macro distances you are fine. You are better off with an external flash, anyway. 3. With the Sea and Sea strobe I did most of my photos at F8 for maximum depth of field. 4. The batteries were good for about seventy minutes, almost but not quite two dives. Somebody sells a noncanon battery with a 25% longer life, I dont have the link. Hi Eli, I am also using a Canon S40. If time and condition permits, I am planning to take my first diving lessons in mid June. I would like to take my S40 with me to get my first underwater shots. What's the trick of taking underwater shots? Do it work equally in fully automatic mode, or any special adjustments that I have to take? Thanks in advance for your kind advice. HMS

Very nice pictures! I have just bought Canon S45 camera with waterproof case, and I am very delighted to see that my thought of using it with slave flash is a reality. Wow, you have got some amazing photos! As far as diving in Canada, you have my respect, Im strictly a warm water diver. I wont dive again for a while, its so hard for me to get free. But I will post some of my better topside photos. Best Regards, Eli
