The trip had inauspicious beginnings in Kahului |
It was hardly the luxury hotels one might expect in Hawai'i, but perfectly good for the night we flew in. |
Even the seascape there was not terribly impressive, but still somehow beautiful in its simplicity. |
Our first full day we drove the road to Hana, stopping first to hike to a waterfall. |
It amazed me how luscious the jungle is in Hawai'i. It takes over everything in its path! |
The walk back to the falls was gorgeous and felt like something out of a fairy tale. |
I loved this walk! |
The falls were beautiful with a deep pool under them for swimming. |
The road to Hana is extremely twisty. This overlook of Taro fields is where we had to pull over so I could stop being so queasy |
Hamoa Beach, just past Hana, is absolutely beautiful. |
Coming up from Hamoa beach we saw this light. Strange.... |
Another view of Hamoa beach |
It wasn't just the ocean that was beautiful, all the lansdscape was. |
Our room in Hana was also spectacular. Relaxing and welcoming. |
At the end of our first day we had a delicious dinner. |
Good morning Hana, Hawai'i! |
Good morning breakfast! |
Good morning sleepy head! |
We were headed to Oheo gulch, also known as the 7 sacred pools. |
I don't know the names of the trees... does anyone? |
It sure feels like something out of Tolkein. |
Into a bamboo forest... |
...past tumbling falls... |
...up stone stairs... |
...to Waimoku Falls! |
On our way back down we were treated to a rare sight - the big island. It was extremely clear, which is really unusual. |
We drove back down the Hana highway to Haiku, Hawai'i - to this beautiful cottage. |
We got up at 2 in the morning to catch the sunrise on Haleakala volcano. |
It was stunningly beautiful... |
...cloudscapes that felt as if they were cities. |
Sunrise is a slow process... |
...and despite the freezing cold... |
...it was well worth the wait. |
Even the flowers had a "good morning" for the sun. |
We then hopped on bikes and rode down the volcano. Fast. |
If in doubt, go down hill. |
Later that day we hit the beach. |
It was a beautiful beach... |
...if not beautiful weather. |
The next day it was on to Honolulu. We didn't stay long. |
We started driving around Oahu in a counterclockwise fashion. |
It was really a beautiful trip the whole way around. |
As we approached the North Shore it got more mysterious... |
...this is where they shoot the TV show "Lost". Or at least it's near here. |
The weather started getting questionable as we kept on traveling. |
By the time we got to the North Shore it was pouring rain. |
Fortunately it cleared up so we could take a walk a bit later. |
The next day after the rain was beautiful. |
We took a walk in the woods that were on the grounds of the resort. |
Hawaiian woods are green and lush, especially after the rain. |
We were headed to look for sea turtles. I didn't see any while snorkeling, but from the shore we saw their little heads pop up. |
The final day dawned bright and beautiful. |
As with every day, we greeted the sun. |
We later snorkeled here in this cove. It was gorgeous. |
We then took one last hike to the Western-most tip of Oahu. It was a wonderful way to end the trip. |
