Rideau Bridges

These photographs are part of a personal project for which I photographed bridges crossing the Rideau River in Ottawa, Canada. The project is not documentary; rather I am exploring the visual designs that result from framing these structures in the square viewfinder of the camera. The bridges are an accessible but often ignored photographic subject and I hope the viewer will enjoy the pictures that can be made using these features of a typical cityscape.

The photographs in this gallery are scans from prints exhibited as part of a juried group show at the Ottawa City Archives Gallery in November & December 2012. The original prints are toned gelatin-silver prints made from medium format film negatives. I find personal rewards in tackling both the artistic challenges in composing with the camera and the craft challenges of print-making.

My inspirations for this project include the work of photographers David Plowden (USA) & Geoffrey James (Canada).

These things are beautiful because in the middle of the apparent incoherence of nature or the cities of men they are the places of geometry, a realm where practical mathematics reigns... and is not geometry pure joy?
