Tokyo is a cat city. I had taken pictures of cats in Tokyo for quite some time when I realized that one of my favourite photographers, Araki Nobuyoshi, had published a book with that titel ("Tokyo nekomachi"). Cats are virtually everywhere in the city. Maybe not in the main roads of Shinjuku or Ginza, but you just have to go around the corner one or two times, and there will be a cat in a backyard. My main aim was (and still is) to depict the cats in their natural (!?) environment. Sometimes you will have to look very carefully to discover the cat on a certain image. The images also tell a lot about living in downtown Tokyo, which is often quite different from what one would expect from the capital of the world's second biggest economic power.
