Why Pictures Now?

Vienna, Austria

This is definitely not a very good shot. But it raises an important question. The poster in the background is for the exhibition "Why Pictures Now" (the title derives from a work by Aerican artist Louise Lawler) about new positions in photography in the past 30 years or so. The exhibition at MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art) in Vienna still can be seen until October 1, and I can only recommend everybody to see it.
Why pictures now, is a question I have not asked myself too often in the past year and a half years since I bought a digital SLR camera. I just took pictures like crazy, supposedly more that 30,000 all together. It was great fun of course, and I also learned quite a lot, but sometimes, I wonder what I am doing all that for.... Would be interested to hear whether the "why" is of any importance to you.

Why? I do it is because gives me satisfaction. What is this satisfaction about? Taking pictures, or posting them and getting comments, or getting good comments? All of this for me.

Why? Because we love it, because we want to please ourselves, because to a certain extent we are artists,....you can't anaylse why artists do their things. :) And because life is too short to not having such fun as taking pictures. :)
Moreover, pictures can be a self-reflection. They reflects who we are, and what are inside our minds and heart, even sometime we don't recognise.....

Why?
My photos and my journals will be all that can speak for me after I am gone.

I like the image as it comes, maybe it could have been even more fun if the persil add were clearly visible. as for the question, I am an amateur, not a philosopher...
