Decaying of key support beams forced the closing the Whitter Covered Bridge in October 2006. This has caused a tilt toward the downstream side, leaving the bridge in danger of collapsing. Restoration of the bridge is being planned.
On 4/5/2008 we visited the bridge and were pleased to see work activity taking place leading to the it's repair.
On July 2, 2008 the bridge was moved from it's supporting abutments onto land where it will be renovated. The project will take around two years and cost about a million dollars. The monies coming from several grants and local fund raising. - 10/23/2008 eJW
