Two Lens Tests, Pentax FA 28-200 and Spiratone 400
Mike and Pam found the Pentax 28-200 at a church rummage sale in Burlingame, CA, and passed it on to me. There was a mechanical problem with the aperture stop down mechanism. Partial disassembly revealed the nature of the problem, and I was able to correct it.
The Spiratone 400 f:6.3 came from an online auction. It is a T-Mount lens, usable for many traditional SLR camera bodies with the appropriate adapter.
Both lenses shared the same problem: haze deep within, on glass element surfaces extremely difficult to access without collateral damage. Visual inspection with light and magnifier suggested that both lenses were a loss, with enough hazing to severely impair optical quality.
But I decided to test them anyway, mounted to a Pentax digital body.
I was surprised by results. Both lenses performed well enough to redeem themselves. Location of damage to their glass was not "fatal."
Tests were performed at home. Exposures were composed on the spot, hand held while standing, no tripod or other support.
