Old Expired Film and Old Minolta with Caffenol

I went to the recently re-opened National Museum of Transportation to shoot some film in a 1980 vintage Minolta Hi-Matic S2.
This was a mostly plastic bodied camera with programmed auto exposure and manual lever wind transport and manual focus, 2.8 feet to infinity, no rangefinder. The lens is reasonably high end, well coated and f:2.8 / 38mm.

I ran a roll of Fuji 400 that I purchased past date at a Goodwill store a few years ago, very cheap, one dollar for the box, stored in my freezer since then.

I carried through with my plan to process it in Caffenol. It was my usual recipe of ingredients with coffee, Vitamin C, and washing soda (sodium carbonate). After developing the film it was fixed in saturated salt water.

Up until this time my results with Caffenol have been very good and improving.
But this time the photos came out rather funky, dark and with a high grain.
It was a true effort to work with the scans of the filmstrip and to tease out the images.
The camera itself has performed quite well in the past, so I believe the roll of Fuji was just too old for normal work.
But then Caffenol can be unpredictable, and maybe I can at least call some of the frames "interesting"?
