Flip Phone Camera and Pentax K110 D at Botanical Gardens 010520

Just after Christmas I was in the local Verizon store on other business and was shocked to learn that within a week my cell phone would die forever. The Network was "upgrading" as of January 1 and no mobile phones would work any more unless they could support a minimum of 4G signal.

I purchased a brand new flip phone on the spot and had my account balance moved over.
Was my old friend the gray LG headed for the trash heap? It was so sad.
Then later I realized that the old phone still had a working digital camera embedded in it, and it stored images to a micro SD card. And it would work as a stand alone camera, even though the phone portion was defunct!
So I cleaned up a 2 mb micro SD card, gave the old phone's battery a full charge, and I was ready for a "project"!

This morning the sun rose clear and bright, the temperature was just on the mild side despite some breeze, and I headed down to the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.

I walked the Garden with the old LG flip phone in my right pocket ready for action, and a Pentax K110 D body hanging from my neck for back up and comparison.

The LG showed itself somewhat capable at close and mid distances, and a bit problematic with more distant landscape subjects. I gave the images some digital tweaking at home. Many responded better than expected to my digital sharpening tool.

The Pentax mostly did fine, but the winter light challenged the auto exposure system. A bit of digital tweaking worked wonders with that.

So here they are, for side by side comparison.
And despite the absence of a network signal, the LG flip phone lives on.
