Argus C4R Wooded Trail and Mill Ruins January 7

Last May at ACG Gathering in Eden, North Carolina, Bob Kelly handed me two Argus C4R examples with bad shutters.
This week I got around to looking them over. I spent some spare time and overhauled one, repairing the shutter mainspring and flushing the blade assembly, then cleaning and remounting the lens.
I tested all the shutter speeds electronically after repair. Sticker on top of camera shows marked speed vs actual tested speed.
Focus was also checked for accuracy at the film plane.

Saturday midday I headed for the local woods and Big River. Walked far up and down the horse trail from Pleasant Valley Preserve, then drove down into the Big River valley and explored the dam and ruins at what was the Byrnes Mill. I went into the actual ruins, and scrambled out to the end of the remnants of the dam.
(There were once 5 local grist mills on this stretch of Big River: Morse Mill, Byrnesville Mill, Cedar Hill Mill, Rockford Mill, and Byrnes Mill).

Our winter has been very mild so far. These images are unusual for early January.

Film was CVS brand asa 200. This was my last roll of a batch I picked up last summer. I think the stuff was weak in color rendition.
The front lens surface on this C4R had some damage, the coating was scratched. This is the probable reason for the flare seen in some of the images, and the general softening of midtone detail.
