Originally had intended to go to Roosevelt Dam in the Superstition Mountains, but the clouds didn't quite blow out in time - we hit solid fog before Miami. Plan B was to go to Tucson via the old highway - we did, and saw lots of great stuff at the San Xavier del Bac Mission and Saguaro National Park. We've been to both before, so it we went straight to each place - unfortunately, we didn't get there soon enough to hit the Sonoran Desert Museum, which would have been a big bonus.
