Works from "The Journey", Applegate Gallery and Custom Framing, 101 Church St, Vienna, VA
2 January 2010 to 27 January 2010
The images in this show are my personal take on the journeys of self-discovery that are universal to human culture: for example, Walkabout in the aboriginal Australian culture, the Fool’s Journey in Western tradition, and, more recently, literature like Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.
This past year has been a personal journey of mine, jumping feet-first into the world of photography and art from a completely different existence as an engineer. In some ways, the trip has been difficult, but it has been entirely rewarding in other ways. Most importantly, I’ve started to find an artistic voice, which is represented in this show.
The images you see are predominantly taken over the previous year, but also include a few special images from prior years: “Escape” dates from 2004, and represents the start of my artistic journey; “Desert Bones” was captured during a mini-sabbatical in the desert in 2006; and “Honopu Beach” (2007) represents the incredible range of beauty in the world that served as an inspiration for this journey.
The remainder of images are the past 12 months, and were taken while traveling through New Hampshire and Maine (February), Western Massachusetts (May), Maine again (July), and southern Utah (September).
In closing, I’ve been fortunate to capture these places as you see them, and am inspired that these images are only a tiny portion of the world that is out there to experience.
