Monday October 7
Woke at 7, on the road by 8. Drive to Skye via Inverness. Stopped in the morning by Killiecrankie, view of the Killiecrankie gorge. Drove to Queen's View on Loch Tummel - fantastic view. Getting late, so drove through to Inverness. After a little problem with the Nav system, found downtown Inverness and ate at The Corner Grill. More arguing with the nav system due to closed streets and reversed one ways. Drove down the east side of Loch Ness on General Wade's Military Road, stopped several times for the view, including one at Boleskine cemetery outside Foyers.
Rain picked up and got fairly heavy as we drove through Fort Augustus, and back up to catch the branch to Skye. Glen Shiel was amazing, but too rainy to see too much.
Made it to hotel in Kyleakin. Ate at Saucy Mary's for dinner (seafood deli board - smoked haddock, smoked salmon, shrimp, pickled herring, potato salad, green salad, bread, pickles.; cottage pie - both very good.) Crashing early.
Tues October 8
Up early, full Scottish breakfast. Down the Strathaird Peninsula to Elgol. Fantastic ruined church and small loch with reeds in front of the mountains. Road to Elgol very pretty. Then across to Carbost (Talisker Distillery) - very interesting. Lunch at the Old Inn (Cullen skink and salmon salad). Out to the end of the road at Portnalong - pretty, but wild, then down to Glen Brittle and the Cuillin Hills covered by cloud. Back to hotel to prepare for dinner.
Dinner at 3 Chimneys - road there is very long, dinner and inn/restaurant are excellent. Drive back in the dark was easier - less amazing scenery to distract you.
Wed October 9
Up a little later, light breakfast. Head out to Eilean Donan castle for its opening at 10am - in a driving rain squall. Ended by the time we were halfway through the castle. Most of the castle is reconstruction dating from 1920s. Interior dates is Victorian to 1930s decor. Good exterior shots.
Drove up to Applecross via Pass of the Cattle - off and on rain. Ate at Applecross Inn (roast beef sandwich, burger, chips). Headed around the peninsula in mostly rain - couldn't see much of the outer islands. Home early around 4pm.
Dinner at Gabbro bar (not a fancy place) attached to the Broadford Inn, which has a reasonable claim to be the place that invented Drambuie. Pub chicken curry, mussels - not bad.
