Madeira is filled with a network of water channels, or levadas, that carry water from the wetter northern areas to the drier southern parts. These provide instant access to the whole of the country for walkers. As long as you have a good head for heights, anyway. This stretch was easy going, but a little later on there is a sheer drop to one side which I found pretty scary.
