Almost all of these cacti are squeezed into a narrow raised bed by the house - the only place that gets much sun in winter. They survive the winter outside without protection.
The two Disocactus hybrids are jungle cacti and require somewhat warmer conditions, so they were pot-grown and brought in for the winter for the first couple of years. However, other people's success with keeping them outside during mild frosts encouraged me to experiment during winter 07/08. Disocactus x Ackermannii has stayed in its wall-pot against the fence, and has survived -3C with only minor damage to a couple of stems. A small plant of the other Disocactus has been in the ground under a Trachycarpus, with no cold damage or rot, but some slug damage.
