Taormina is marvellously situated on a hill with breathtaking views on the Etna and the Ionian sea.
Like everywhere in Sicily you stumble on history and succesive cultures left buildings piled up older ones or using their materials.
The highlight of all that is the Greek-Roman amphitheatre.Construction by Greek colonists started in 3rd century BC.
As for recent history:the German marshall Albert Kesselring had his headquarters in the exclusive hotel San Domenico Palace during WWII.Unfortuately the Allies had to bomb Taormina but Kesselring survived.
And beside history there is of course the charming Italian atmosphere and vibrant colors...
