When the fortress lost his military importance it was used to keep voyagers in quarantine.
This was not only for ships coming to Antwerp but also for numerous emigrants to the US and Canada.
Between 1843 and 1913 around 188.000 mostly from Eastern European countries passed through Antwerpen.
