Salamanders of Michigan

I find salamanders to be fascinating creatures. They are slender, beautiful and have that doleful expression to their faces that most of us find so endearing in mammals. Another aspect of their allure is their secretive nature. Indeed, most people are not aware of their presence on the trails they frequent or even their own property. These creatures spend most of their lives underground, only coming to the surface for a brief two week period in late Winter. This is their breeding migration to vernal pools, and even then they undertake this journey only after dark. So to witness this annual event, one has to be adventurous enough (or crazy?) to enter the woods on the dark, cold and rainy nights of March and early April. I have been doing that for many years, and here are some of my photographs of salamanders and their habitats. Each image contains information about the species. (Simply click on the thumbnail.). Hope you enjoy! Eddie
