Sky Islands

The mountain ranges of southern Arizona and New Mexico are called "Sky Islands" because they rise as isolated masses from the surrounding desert. Reaching to heights of 10,000 feet, the Sky Islands generate the most ecologically-diverse region in the entire country. Here, a journey from Sonoran/Chihuahuan desert ecology to near-alpine communities can occur in a mere matter of miles. This leads to incredibly diverse landscapes, and an incredible variety of plants, insects, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Not surprisingly, many species of animals and plants are endemic to each “Sky Island” (found nowhere else in the country). My family and I have just begun to explore this region. We welcome you on this journey and hope to add to this site for many years to come.....Eddie, Laurel, Matthew and Sadie.
