On August 25, 2006, I headed north of McCall to the Chinook campground (about 30 miles north of McCall on Warren Wagon Rd), where the trailhead starts for Loon Lake. It was a wonderful sunny day in the mountains, the trail follows the Secesh River (short for secession, as it was named by southern sympathizers during the Civil War). After 3.5 miles it comes to a bridge across the Secesh and then the trail climbs hard for about 1 mile then flattens on top in a alpine meadow area for about 1/2 mile until you get to Loon Lake. The lake itself is beautiful, about 1/2 mile across, with tall mountains looming in the background. After setting up camp on the north side, we took a "nature trail" to the south side to see the B-23 Dragon Bomber that had crashed there during a winter storm in the 1940's. info on the Dragon Bomber story : http://www.idahoptv.org/outdoors/shows/path/bomb.html
