At half past four on the morning of April 12, 1861, from a mortar on Fort Johnson, the first shot of the Civil Warwas fired on Ft. Sumpter in Charleston harbor. Fort Johnson itself is long gone, but to stand on this spot is a sobering experience, considering all of the lives that were lost.
