7/7/08 - Coneflower Montage

This is an in-camera montage (overlay of two images - one in focus & one way out of focus that provides the glow around the flowers). This was done using the D300's Image Overlay feature and could have been done using the D300's Multiple Exposure feature as well. In the case of two images the Overlay feature provides better control over the appearance of the final image than does the Multiple Exposure since the "gain" of each of the two exposures can be individually adjusted.
Compositionally this is a progression from yesterday's image of the main flower and one bud - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/99753182 - by adding a 2nd bud. The amount of "tripod fiddling" was considerable - in order to properly frame the image (I don't crop in software) including placement in the frame, spacing between objects (close but not overlapping) and distance of objects from the frame (nearly the same for all objects and all sides). The collection of three objects forms a "virtual" oblique triangle.
You can't do this without a tripod and a good head (I'm replacing my Kirk ballhead after 4 years with a Markin M20 - hoping for more stability when the camera is at odd angles with a load and easier precise movements in the fraction of an inch range).

Dreamy. Like the composition. Vote.
