4/3/08 - Holland's Beauty

No, not Holland as in the Netherlands. John Holland, a neighbor, who after planting beautiful flowers on his property took on the challenge of also beautifying some adjacent common ground in our community. Besides the beauty it provides for everyone in the neighborhood, it gives the occasional wondering photographer (me) numerous photo ops. Thanks, John.
Several types of Daffies (I count at least 3, the 3rd being the ones with orange centers blurred in the background that first caught my eye when walking by) growing at the base of a forsythia near a large rock and wood mulch (hiding an ugly concrete culvert).
Took several shots of this scene from different angles and heights before settling on this one from about a foot above the ground so that there was a visual curved line from the near daffy back to the orange centers in the background to take the viewer's eye into and through the scene. The same location from a standing height (where most folks would shoot from) caused the gap between the center yellow daffies and the background daffies to be too large, thus "breaking the line" - not bad but this looks better by comparison. The orange center's are critical in maintaining the illusion of the visual line (human physiology says that the eye is attracted to bright colors and certain shapes like circles - which is what the background daffies provide). This approach, in my opinion, separates what I try to do from "just another *snapshot*". I ran the image through Nik's Color Efex Pro 3's Polaroid Transfer filter to give it a more arty look.
