Swift action by Brigadier General Gouverneur K. Warren saved this key position. Warren had been sent to survey the left flank of the union army on the afternoon of July 2, 1863. Climbing to the summit of Little Round Top, Warren was aghast at what he saw- this key hill was unprotected. He sent for troops who arrived shortly before the advancing Confederate troops would have taken this key site.
The confederate troops tried to advance across the low open fields in front of this position - resulting in one of the bloodiest days of the US Civil War.
