1/17/06 - An Oldie but Goodie

Sorry for this recycled image from last spring. I'll do better tomorrow.
This is one of my two colored print entries in tonight's Open Themed competition. The other is http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/54236424
I'm curious to see how these measure up with a photojournalist as a judge. Neither are what I think of as photojournalism - but then I don't shoot for the judge. Besides she has a Fine Arts degree so maybe her perspective is broader.
This is a shoot-through. Focus on the main blossom (about 18" away) while shooting through intervening branches & blossoms.

Nikon D70
1/100s f/8.0 at 105.0mm full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

The dof and colors are superb!

Post-competition comment. The judge passed on this one. Said that it wasn't sharp enough. From my perspective that missed the point of my vision. It was supposed to have a soft dreamy quality to it. Sharpening it would have ruined what I tried to accomplish. She's not wrong, nor am I, we just see things differently. Of my 4 entries, she did award 1st place ribbons to 2 of them - a monchromehttp://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/54300832 and an enhancedhttp://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/53889344

On the 2nd colored print image - the water-drop flag - her only comment was "I don't know what to say about this one - so it's out". Not especially insightful.

Wow.. this is my kind of photo - the colors are my favorites.. the shallow dof is exquisite.. I can't see that you'd do anything but top notch in the competition.
