Clayton, I live in Gainesville, VA. The scene in that image is headed north on Skyline Drive about 3-4 miles from the Front Royal entrance. When it was taken the leaves were almost gone at the high elevations near Skyland at the 41 mile post but still good as you went lower toward Front Royal. A strategy I like in the fall is to start at Front Royal at about this time of the year and drive to Skyland - in about an hour you'll get a "fast forward of fall" as you progress from fall to winter forest (and reverse the direction in the spring, making the trip when red buds & dogwoods are in bloom in the valley).

I'm a volunteer photographer for the national park service and go to the park regularly - at least twice a month and often weekly.

If you check my October PAD gallery -http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/oct_10_pad - you'll see more autumn park images. Unfortunately, when I went from Sept to Oct galleries I forgot to change which was my PAD gallery so the Oct images got overlooked by viewers - I wondered why views/comments fell off in Oct & now I know.

In particular this Oct post gives an example of what the park service does with my work -http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/129682550

Wow Ed, what a fine scene and so well captured and composed. I must see this area soon as it isn't too far from here in WV. V
