Sunset from atop the Blue Ridge Mountains looking out over the Shenandoah Valley. The sky coloration at sunrise/set from up here has to be seen to believe. It is best from about 15-45 minutes into twilight (that is, 15-45 before actual sunrise or 15-45 after actual sunset). This image doesn't do it justice as it's actually the deepest, richest red right at the horizon that you've ever seen (that red is missing in the image) and then progresses through to orange, yellow, blues/violets. It must have to do do with the fact that the visible horizon is so far away and thus you can see light rays that have traveled much farther through the earth's atmosphere than you would normally encounter. Whatever - spectacular. Of course the haze over the mountains and in the valley shows why these are the BLUE Ridge mountains of Virginia.
