A four masted schooner moored at Bar Harbor, Maine. This infrared image was an experiment - it is an HDR processed image made up of six images (-1 to +2.67 EV in 2/3 EV steps with IR converted D70). The tonal range between the early morning eastern sky and the black foreground rocks (the white on the rocks is mostly kelp, not waves) was greater than the camera could handle. I could have done with less than 6 exposures (say, just use every other one) but wanted to see what would happen - especially with the small waves which would be different in each exposure so what would the blended result look like (I was expecting the water detail to be blurred and was pleased/surprised that it wasn't). So there you have it - six RAW images converted to JPEG in Capture NX, then processed as an HDR image in Photomatix Pro, and finally some B&W conversion in Nik Silver Efex Pro where some noise was added to the image in keeping with film IR looks. Long live the digital darkroom.......
