09/14/09 - "HDR Grunge" Gazebo in IR

Just doing a little experimentation at one of my favorite spots, an easy 1 mile walk from my house. The experiment was to try using an HDR program (Photomatix Pro) on an infrared image. This was made shortly after sunrise (sun is at low upper left) at which time the foreground is in deep shade. Shooting RAW I can compensate for the tonal extremes between the gazebo & falls but wanted to see what HDR would do with it. This is 5 exposures separated by 1-stop each. The HDR effect is exaggerated (hey, if you're doing HDR why not go all the way) by using the Photomatix preset called "Grunge" which does HDR to the extreme (opposite from "Natural"; my single image RAW conversion using Capture NX was better than anything I could get from Photomatix if natural was the goal). Compare this image with the same scene made a month ago where I left the shadows stay dark (single exposure). - http://ed-k-photo.smugmug.com/Photo-a-Day/2009/2009-Daily-Photos/6988948_kjHp8/1/579127759_i78t7/Large
