05/10/09 - Whiteoak Canyon Falls #1

2nd highest falls in Shenandoah National Park (I think) at about 90 feet. I'm standing at the very edge of a rock outcrop (vertigo, poor balance, and all) with over 100 feet between me and the bottom - and I'm not very comfortable. Naturally, once again I had to change lenses in a spot where just standing was a challenge. And don't ask about the 4+ mile hike with a ton of gear - I had doubts about getting back up to the trail head after my 20th (or was it 200th) stop to catch my breathe. Ahh - the joys of being a nature photographer. This isn't one of my best pieces of work but it's posted to remind me of where I was and, more importantly, of the agony of getting there & back with so little to show for it. Think twice before doing it again.
After several days of rain the falls were roaring; come back in late summer and it will be a trickle.

The sound should have cleansed your spirit as it washed away the travails of the endeavor to reach this spot. Time taken to savor the moment and place may not show in the photo to us. However, it will greatly enrich the photo for you.
