9/25/08 - HDR Dawn

A 3-exposure HDR image made about 20 minutes before the sun came up over the horizon.
A good breeze was blowing & moved the cattails around a lot. Between the movement in the longest exposure (10 sec) and needing to align 3 separate windblown images, this was a real test for the HDR software (Photomatix in this case). I actually made 4 exposures - the additional one was at 20 sec exposure which I omitted because its alignment was too far off.
This image has picked up the characteristic "unnatural" HDR effect. Because of the alignment issues, coupled with the wide tonal variation between the darkest & lightest exposure, I wasn't able to make this look *natural*.

The processing gave this a really nice Impressionistic look - it's a lovely image, if not a natural looking photograph.

I love the colors, Ed. Alignment is a real problem with multiple exposures in a strong breeze!

Re your elaboration: Still, it makes a very pleasing photograph, with a kind of ethereal feel. I sometimes think our quest for a "natural" look keeps us from seeing other kinds of beauty.
