9/7/08 - Fall Ferns

It was raining buckets - Shenandoah National Park during tropical depression Hanna.
Went a short way down the Dark Hollow Falls trail to see if Hanna had done anything interesting to Hog Camp Branch - mostly made it muddy. There were lots of pretty ferns putting on their fall colors on the opposite side of the trail. Spent about 30 minutes making images like this one.
Do you think it was dark & dreary? How does 1/2 second exposure at ISO400 compare with the "Sunny 16" rule? 1/2 sec instead of 1/400 sec = 7-8 Stops? Yeah - it was pretty dark for 11 AM. The 1/2 second exposure explains the soft ferns, especially near the left edge of the frame because besides dark and rainy, it was windy, too. But - I enjoyed the experience & the image, also.
I was covered head to toe in Gore-Tex rain gear and still felt soaked. Have to order some DWR (durable water repellent) to fix this. But - I kept my camera dry and had no weather related image casualties except for two where the camera's rain cover impinged slightly into the field of view (small enough to easily crop if I decide to keep those images).
