Wild Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

Buttercup Family (Ranunculaceae)
Wild Red Columbine is a long-lived perennial herb, reaching 2-3 feet tall. The compound (almost fernlike) leaves are found basally and on the stem. Each leaf division is in threes. The nodding, bell-like flowers have red sepals, red and yellow petals with upward-pointing red spurs, and numerous yellow stamens hanging below. Flowers February through July. Hummingbirds, bumblebees, and hawk moths are attracted to the flowers for the nectar in each long spur. Different parts have been used to treat heart trouble, kidney problems, headaches, bladder problems, fever, and poison ivy. Some have used its seeds as a love charm. Found in somewhat shaded to open woods, frequently around rock or limestone outcrops, bluffs, and slopes, east of the Rockies. Sometimes abundant in disturbed areas like along roadsides. Also known as American columbine, Canada columbine, eastern columbine, meetinghouses, rock bells, rock lily, Jack-in-trousers, granny's bonnets, and dancing fairies. Listed as endangered by the state of Florida.
