St.James Church, Victoria Road, silhouette as seen from the roof of my house.
Its foundation stone was laid on 16th February 1854, and the church, designed by Gilbert George Scott in the gothic style, was consecrated on 10th July 1856. Aside from its commanding stature, I really like this church because I've grown up and matured listening to its bells peeling away on many a Sunday morning. Its is a noise so unobtrusive that it can either be ignored in favour of a return to slumber or embraced as a welcome, gentle wake up call.
Being in an exposed position, St James has suffered the odd gale battering from time to time and also some damage to the spire and windows during World War Two (1939-45 - as if you didn't know). Its railings and gates were removed in 1941 to assist with the war effort and were finally restored in 1950.
