This was the highlight during an otherwise very disappointing visit to Sanjay Gandhi National Park. A pleasant walk from the gate took me to the Lion Safari and Tiger Safari parks, where I boarded a bus for a nominal 30 rupees. They fill the 28-seater with as many people as can fit in and then head off. It all seems quite exciting and the bus passes through two sets of gates...and goes down hill from there. The bus is driven too quickly and stops only briefly when a predator is spotted. Rather than allowing time for all people to see an animal and take a picture the bus jerks forward leaving those people at the back of the bus with little or no opportunity to enjoy an experience. Can you guess where I was sitting? So there were only two lions and they were in the distance but when we got to the Tiger safari there wasn't a single animal in sight! Very disappointing. The park is not well-maintained and there's plenty of litter about, too; the staff were not particularly helpful and the lack of signage just added an extra cloud to the day. On the plus side I took the sleeper train from Borivali train station back to Bandra, which was actually less crowded than the first class compartments.
