In January 2010 I have had the opportunity to visit the Mammoth Museum in Thessaloniki. I was quite surprised to see such a wonderful and lovely museum which is located in front of the Dinosaur Park and the Nouvelle Hotel in Oreokastro in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The Mammoth Museum is an initiative of Professor Dr Evangelia Tsoukala of the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki and is developed by her and her team of students. It is fully supported by the owner of the Nouvelle Hotel, Mr Vasilis Michailidis. The design of the museum has been made by Vangelis Vlachos, one of Evangelia’s students. The museum is devoted to the rich source of mammoth fossils which have been trawled by fisherman from the sea floor between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. It tells a very interesting story about climate change, large mammals such as woolly mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses which have roamed the area between 50.000 and 40.000 years ago. The museum provides a wealth of information on mammoths, on the exterior, on their distribution, on their evolution and tooth replacement. There is so much to learn.
Before entering the Thessaloniki Mammoth Museum you have to go through the exciting Dinosaur Park which is very attractive for children. I added some pictures I took to this website. I hope you enjoy them. And, if ever you are in Thessaloniki, you have to see this museum.
The museum can be found at:
