The spirals remind me of insect larvae. I once bushwhacked through a bog below a Colorado mountain and as I emerged from the willows I noticed that my sweater was covered with green seeds. I soon discovered that those "seeds" were wriggling about. Yep, my sweater was coated with insect larvae not too dissimilar in appearance from this sculpture.
