Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is one modernistic jewel in Barcelona’s architectural crown. It sits on the Passeig de Gracia within the Mansana de la Discordia – so called because of the apparent clash of architectural styles.

The casa was deigned by Gaudi “representing an allegory of the story of Sant Jordi”. Jordi is the patron saint of Catalonia and he of George and the Dragon fame. The roof is the dragon’s back and the balconies, sculpted in the form of carnival masks, are its victim’s skulls.

The building's free-flowing exterior lines continue inside. Gaudi preferred curves and swirls to lines and corners. Setting aside aesthetic controversy, the architect demonstrates real flare for creative living spaces – both grand and work-a-day.
