The name Gošafoss (the cascade of Gods) derives from the historical christianization of Iceland.
In the year 999-1000 the lawspeaker Žorgeirr Ljósvetningagoši made Christianity the official religion of Iceland.
After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Alžingi (the old viking parlament),
Žorgeirr threw his old statues of the heathen Norse gods into the waterfall. It's been called Gošafoss ever since.
