Beerenberg (dutch for Bear Mountain). Here seen from out sea SW of the island.
A genuine stratovolcano, and the worlds northernmost active volcano above sea level.
Rising 2277m high, straight up from the deep sea floor more than 2000m below its shores.
Last eruptions 1970, 1973 and 1985, all from vents in the NE flank (the back side in this view).
No eruptions from the main crater for ages, although minor smoke and steam can still be seen inside it, along the northern base of the rim.
Beerenberg resides on the remote Norwegian island Jan Mayen, at 71șN, along the northern part of the MAR (Mid-Atlantic Ridge),
600km NE of Iceland, 500km E of Greenland, 1000km NW of Norway. No regular traffic reaches this destination.
And note that even this close you still cannot see the shores, due to the curvature of the earth.
