Mark: Thanks for your input and commentary. Actually the two lens + camera combinations are quite close in weight. The Sigma 500mm is about three pounds lighter than the Nikon 500mm, and the 300mm f2.8 has that huge 122mm front objective (i.e., large heavy piece of expensive glass) up front, so it's not exactly a lightweight either. The 500mm does balance quite nicely, and is very suitable for hand-holding in good light. Another point worthy of mention - and one which you will immediately recognize - is that the 500mm works very nicely with Gimbal4 and my existing tripod; no need for further modifications or tripod upgrade!

David, you old trickster! Ya fooled me on that mallard drake lens test. Like you said on the Exx Friends forum though, one of the attractions of that 500mm is the AF performance on a lens of this caliber. The other is of course, it's double duty as a weight-training device. ;) I'll bet the prints just shine like nothing else too! Mark
