When using flash for macro work, remembe the compound nature of an insect's eyes will result in some bizarre reflections. Bearing in mind the size of a dragonfly's eyes (relative the head and body), what you see here is the "gonzo effect;" wherein the eyelets directly reflecting the flash to the camera are surrounded by other eyelets which are reflecting light away from the lens. Sort of cool overall. By the way there are several threads on nature photography forums about the use of long telephotos (500 & 600mm) for macro insect imaging. Seems other people are also discovering the added advantages of the increased working distance accorded by such glass -- avoids spooking your subjects. I have staked out the breeding territories of these guys and have posited "posing perches" to which the males constantly return to defend their territories. Makes finding these guys and getting suitable poses much easier.
