Hummingbird Moths (Common Clearwing)

Hummingbird Moths are close cousins to the Sphinx Moths. The most commonly seen is the Common clearwing (Hemaris thyshe). This hyper insect is a bundle of energy, always on the move as it nectars from blooming plants. Thes images were captured using the Nikon D70 + Sigma 400mm in macro mode, or with a sigma 105mm macro olens.

I've never seen the caterpiller or larval stage for a hummingbird moth. For sphinx moths, I always loooked on tomato plants and/or four o'clocks; both seem to be favored species. The bonus with four o'clocks is they grow in the shade and the sphinx moths love to feed there. I have my best luck with the hummingbird moths during the day, from 1 PM on, right up to dusk. Wow, you managed really impressive close ups of that guy in midair. These guys have been chewing up the periwinkle in my garden like a pacman gone AWOL. I only managed to get macros of the caterpillar stage (http://www.pbase.com/tsechien/giant_caterpillar ) as the moth feeds at dusk, last light of the day and my lens ain't good enough (focus hunts like crazy and not fast enough).
